Parish Swim remembers teammate with spirit award

Parish Swim pays tribute to teammate Mira Foshee ‘22.

During the season ending banquet, Parish Swim paid tribute to teammate Mira Foshee ’22, who suffered a fatal accident while traveling over the holiday break in January. The Middle School Spirit Award and The Panther Award, given to Middle and Upper School swimmers each year, have been renamed the Mira Foshee Middle School Spirit Award and the Mira Foshee Upper School Panther Award. Mira received the MS award last season and was set to win the Panther Award in US this year.

“Mira was a light and joy,” said Lia Oberstar-Brown, Parish Swim Coach. “She was eternally positive and a ray of sunshine. She was the one I use to say, ‘It’s early but at least I get to see Mira at practice this morning.’ She was quick to laugh, slow to anger and rich in compassion.”

The awards go to swimmers who demonstrate a positive attitude and are unconditionally supportive, courageous and a joy to coach. This year, Christopher G. ‘25 and Maggie M. ‘24 received the MS Award. Mira, Hannah Blue ‘22, Sam Soule ‘21 and Matthew Wiggans ‘22 received the US award.

“Mira will live on in our hearts, minds and souls,” added Oberstar-Brown.

Mira’s parents, Soume and Paul Foshee, attended the swim banquet on February 10. They got to hear many wonderful stories about Mira and how she was such a positive influence to the team. Prior to the banquet, the swim team filled a gratitude jar full of remembrances of Mira and put her team picture in a sparkly frame. All of the swimmers signed a purple kickboard in honor of Mira, and at the championship swim meets in January and February, the team wore special swim caps bearing her name. The team framed the cap and Mira’s spirit award. They presented the items and the kickboard to her parents. Parish Swim also has special plans to mark Mira’s birthday on April 2.
