My Parish Moment - Middle School Community Service

Not only is service a tenet at Parish Episcopal School, it's also the focus of a class for Middle School students.

Becky Crawford is marking her 27th year at Parish Episcopal School. During her long career, she’s taught in the classroom, served as a division head, librarian and is now Director of the Legacy Program (1st-12th grade) and  Experiential Education and Service Learning (3rd-8th grade).

“I truly enjoy the Parish community,” said Crawford. “Each day is a fresh new day where anything can happen and the kids make me laugh. I get to see human beings travel through the stages of childhood to adulthood. What could be more awesome?”

This is the second year for Parish to receive a $30,000.00 donation to put toward community service. The anonymous donor came forward last year because they wanted to help 8th grade students put dollar power - $10,000 per trimester - behind their passion to serve others. The students follow a set of criteria as they research a nonprofit of their choice. A finalist is chosen from each of the three trimesters by a panel of judges during their classroom presentations. The finalists share their presentations during Middle School chapel and educate others about their nonprofit. At the end of the school year, the 8th grade "winners" are recognized at the Moving Up Ceremony. Last year's $30,000.00 award served U.S. disabled veterans, provided clean water for communities in India and literacy through distribution of books on the African continent.
