The Parish Episcopal Middle School Quiz Bowl team beat out the top schools and claimed the trophy in the Hornet Hullabaloo tournament September 12. The “A” team of 8th graders - Varun Gande, Sohum Kulkarni, Jared Miller, Nishant Mukherjee and alternate Chase Barclay – answered trivia questions about a number of topics including sports, pop culture, literature and math.
It was a dramatic finish to the season’s first tournament. Parish came back from a 150 point deficit in the semi-finals, to go on to beat St. Marks School of Texas in the finals. The first place win qualifies them for nationals in Chicago.
“To win first place, first tournament, first full year, that’s a pretty big deal,” said James Herman, 8th grade Humanities teacher and Quiz Bowl sponsor.
Until this year, the Parish team had only competed in one tournament where they placed third. Senior Ryan Chandler - who competes at the high school level - started the middle school team mid-season last year, as part of his Leadership Institute LEADS project. He wanted to get younger students interested in quiz bowl and prepare them for the high school team.
“Quiz bowl is my passion because I’m the kind of person that likes to search for knowledge... it’s how I can do that and show it off,” said Chandler, Class of ’16.
Chandler, who also serves as one of the middle school team’s coaches, says he loves competing with his mind. It’s something he’s passing along to the 8th graders; and so far, they’ve proven to be fierce competitors, knocking out the top Quiz Bowl teams.
“St. Marks is one of the best in the country so I was really, really proud of them,” added Chandler.
The two teams will face off again at the next Quiz Bowl tournament October 24th, at St. Marks in Dallas.
