 Around Campus

We have just about wrapped up week two. Hopefully everybody is off to a great start! Some pretty neat things are already happening in the Parish Universe. Here are a few we caught this week. Enjoy …

Can’t find a conversation starter with your teenager? We found (or forced) one for you. All Upper School students were required to read “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin over the summer. Some great discussions took place about the book during advisories Tuesday and Wednesday. The CliffsNotes version: it’s about one man’s mission to promote peace … one school at a time.  You might want to check it out.

spanish_090707Some engaging math lessons happened this week in our lower grades – yes, you read that right--engaging math lessons. Third grade Spanish students were moving and excited as they reviewed classroom vocabulary, colors and addition and subtraction. They were having so much fun they barely noticed they were doing it all in Spanish!

Second graders also made addition a game. Using one of our computer labs, these students were in a race against the clock while they played Eggs on Legs. One student completed 15 problems in less than two minutes. Try to beat that!

bird_watching090707Environmental stewardship isn’t just for the birds, ya know. Middle School students are helping Texas Watch collect data for water quality analysis of the Farmers Branch stream. While half of the science class collects data, the other half goes bird watching to help create an awareness of birds that can be found on the Midway Campus and of birding techniques. Then the groups switch.

  Weekend Update

The fall sports train keeps on rolling. This weekend Middle School and Upper School football and volleyball combine for a whopping 14 games.

fhockey_090707Six members of the Parish speech team will make their fall debut when they travel Saturday to an all day tournament at Holy Trinity.

Speaking of a debut, the Parish field hockey team is stepping out in a big way this weekend! The mighty Panthers got the invite to the Hockaday Field Hockey Festival and will square off against perennial powerhouses today and tomorrow. Good luck girls!

  Hot Topic

cell_phone_090707Let’s start this week’s hot topic off with a brief vocabulary review. Courtesy: a polite or considerate act or remark.
Distraction: anything that draws attention in another direction.

It seems several members of our community have been suffering from distractionitis during carpool times – an epidemic that is causing many to draw their attention away from common courtesy to fellow drivers and from the safety of pedestrians.

Please, please, please refrain from using cell phones – even the wireless function – Blackberries, putting on make-up, etc, while you are in carpool line. It is vital to the safety of all members of the Parish Community, especially our children.

Also, please try to show a little patience and kindness toward other parents and carpool volunteers. It is the beginning of the year, and some might still be perfecting their routines.

Thank you for your efforts to make our school a safe, friendly environment.
