We like to make short weeks interesting around here. Enjoy…
Our third graders took uniform infractions to a whole other level today. Togas were ONLY appropriate attire for school in Ancient Rome. It’s a good thing they were playing the part, so we’ll let it slide this time! Keeping with a long held Parish tradition, our students performed their rendition of the rise and fall of Ancient Rome to a standing room only crowd this afternoon. They even cut a few of our Upper School students in on the action! Thank you, guys, for all of your hard work and for showing us that the history of ancient civilization doesn’t have to be a snore!
The Middle School students weren’t to be outdone, though. They came to school dressed in their pjs, with crazy hair and ties and dressed like a page straight out of a Hollywood gossip rag. Of course, it was all part of Middle School Spirit Week, but it just sounds better if you leave that bit till the end, doesn’t it?
There was some learning that went on in the middle grades, too. Fifth graders competed to see who could get the most “bricks” on their vocabulary wall as part of a creative writing exercise. We don’t know who won yet, but we do know that our students can use words correctly that we can’t even define! Kids really are getting smarter!
Finally, it was road trip time for some Pre-K II students. Each of the classes will head downtown to The Dallas World Aquarium this semester for a field trip, and Wednesday was the lucky day for some of our little ones. They were able to see penguins, which have been the subject of much classroom discussion, as you can imagine, and were introduced to a beautiful black jaguar, which was of course dubbed Pete the Panther. Sharks, crocs, stingrays, electric eels, a manatee, rattlesnakes, bats, flamingos and giant sea turtles were also big with the preschool set. Pre-K parents: be on the lookout for a class book that features our young artists’ portraits of their big day out!

Parish is goin’ Green. No, we’re not buying Carbon Credits, but thanks to a faculty committee led by Middle School Dean Christina Broderick and the Middle School Green Team, we are making some strides toward being eco-friendly.
Beginning next week, Parish will begin a new contract with Allied Waste for a recycling program, which will include plastics and aluminum in addition to paper. This renewed awareness campaign will officially kick-off at the Middle School dance, Feb. 1, and will be led by eight representatives from each Middle School grade.
The plan follows the National Association of Independent Schools’ guidelines for global sustainability and will require the participation of the entire community. For more information or to be a member of the parent support group for this project, contact Christina Broderick at 972-852-8794.
