NEW Fifth Grade, February 2002 (posted 3/5/02)
The aims of the music program at The Parish Day School are to create an awareness, appreciation and love of music
promoting cultural development of the child, and to help the child discover music as a part of his/her heritage and as a means of personal expression. It is a further goal to help the child develop a knowledge of the
literature of music and to it enjoy it both as a active performer and as a passive listener. The department teaches the very young to love and enjoy music. They
sing and dance, listen and perform, laugh and learn. The Christmas performances attest to the skill and training of the musicians at PDS. The talent of the teachers is reflected by the performance of the students.
Students in 4th through 6th grade may join the Chorus, which meets after school. This group performs at All School Eucharist, Episcopal School Sunday, and in concert at other special events.
February 2002 (posted 3/5/02) This assignment was correlated with the fifth grade field trip to a symphony orchestra at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Students were
grouped and assigned a featured composer at this concert so that they could become more familiar with their (composers') lives and compositional styles. Here are just a few examples.
5L: These students presented their version of "Good Morning, America" with guest Antonio Vivaldi, a seventeenth century composer of Baroque
music. Mr. Vivaldi delighted the 'studio' audience with a performance of one of his famous violin concertos!
This group of fifth graders present one of the lesser known Russian twentieth century composers, Arcady Dubensky. 5J: A featured composer and journalist in an on-camera interview which
focused on Giovanni Gabrielli's life and work as a Baroque composer. |
