Third Grade Tea with Teachers Third grade parents—don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a visit with the homeroom teachers on February 6 at 10:20 a.m. in the Large Group Meeting Room. They make it a social experience while giving you an opportunity to ask your questions.
Fathers’/Special Friends’ Visiting Morning We will be having a VERY special Fathers’/Special Friends’ Visiting Morning this year to be held on Friday, February 15. The day begins with refreshments at 7:45 a.m., and you will follow a schedule provided by your child’s homeroom teacher. The visiting time will conclude at 12:10, and upper elementary students will be dismissed at 12:15.
Snow Day “Snow Day” will be a culmination of our first fourth grade novel study, Snow Treasure, by Marie McSwigan, and will occur on February 26. The children will be asked to dress in pajamas and slippers and to create a hat from marshmallows to model in the Snow Day Parade. From the entrants in the parade, our audience members will cast an individual vote for their favorite boy's and girl's creation. The votes will be tallied and a Snow Day King and Queen will be announced later in the day. In addition to the Marshmallow Hat Parade and the crowning of the royalty, other activities will include Marshmallow Bingo and Marshmallow Olympics.
Invention Convention The Invention Convention develops the critical thinking ability and process skills necessary to later do original research for Science Fair projects. Each grade level has a different focus and skill to develop, beginning in first grade. As you walk through the Invention Convention, you can see the skill levels as they progress, and you can enjoy the creative thinking exhibited by each child’s project. The Invention Convention is not judged nor are awards given, as we believe every child’s idea has validity and merit.
Third graders will research the life of a famous inventor, learn about simple machines, and then apply their learning by creating inventions containing a simple machine.
Fourth graders will work with an Ecology theme, creating inventions that help save a species, conserve a natural resource, or make recycling easier. For the first time in the process, they may choose to make an exhibit model, rather than a working one, in order to use higher-level or abstract ideas they may come up with, but don’t have the technology or money to actually build. If an exhibit model is done, the inventor must explain in detail how the project WOULD work, if it were possible to make it.
Heart Health Month As part of February--Heart Health Month--the Physical Education department is hosting two events to encourage and to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle. On Tuesday, February 12, ESD’s “Just Skip It” jump rope team coached by Kristine Brockhagen is going to be performing for the PES upper elementary and middle school students in the gym. The “Just Skip It” team was established 22 years ago and now consists of 22 boys and girls second through fifth grade. They have performed at Southern Methodist University, Scottish Rite Hospital, Dallas Mavericks games, North Park Health-Check Health Fair, American Heart Association Heart Walk, as well as at several area schools. After their performance, the team will teach our students a few jumping moves.
On Wednesday, February 13, our upper elementary students will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart program. Jump Rope For Heart is a national educational program that is sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). This educational program teaches physical fitness and promotes the value of community service to students and their families. It shows students that they can contribute to their community's welfare. The upper elementary students will meet at the gym to compete with each other for who can make the most jumps on a jump rope in 15 minutes. The winner will receive a gift certificate.
