Ash Wednesday, Midway Campus

Dear Parish Parents of Midway students,

January 15, 2008

The Church season of Lent is approaching. Shrove Tuesday is February 5, and Ash Wednesday is February 6.   Lent is a period of 40 days and six Sundays leading up to Easter, which has been observed for centuries as a special time of self-examination and penitence- a time for concentration on fundamental values and priorities.

On February 6, the Chapel services on both campuses will be held at 8:00 a.m. for all students, faculty and staff. This will be our full-uniform Eucharist for the week.  This will be a service of Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes. You are welcome to attend. The Imposition of Ashes is a special liturgy (work of worship) in which we recognize that human life is temporal and fleeting.  The ashes are placed on the forehead in the sign of a cross as the priest speaks the words “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return”.  During this part of the service, those gathered will be invited forward should they wish to receive the ashes as a sign of their penance. Please discuss this with your child so that they may be prepared for the service.

Our Eucharist will follow the similar format with all gathered invited forward to receive the sacrament of bread and/or wine, non-denominational blessing, or a prayer of thanksgiving and honor for their faith tradition. We all come forward to communicate to one another in our act of worship that we are all part of our Parish community and as a sign of our respect and honor for our diversity.

The day before Lent is known as Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras. It is a day for eating up the rich foods one may be abstaining from during Lent.  Pancake suppers have become a traditional way to use up ingredients not needed during Lent.  On both campuses that day, February 5, we will be having “pancake lunch”.  If your child participates in the lunch program, please note, that the main entrée for the day will be pancakes, sausage and home fries.

As always, should you have any questions or concerns about our religious life here at Parish, please feel free to contact me.

In Faith,

The Reverend Amy G. Heller
