The Church season of Lent is approaching. Shrove Tuesday is February 5, and Ash Wednesday is February 6. Lent is a period of 40 days and six Sundays leading up to Easter, which has been observed for centuries as a special time of self-examination and penitence- a time for concentration on fundamental values and priorities.
On February 6, the Hillcrest Chapel service will be held at 10:00 a.m. for 1st and 2nd grade students. This will be a service of Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes. You are welcome to attend. The Imposition of Ashes is a special liturgy (work of worship) in which we recognize that human life is temporal and fleeting. The ashes are placed on the forehead in the sign of a cross as the priest speaks the words “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return”. During this part of the service, those gathered will be invited forward should they wish to receive the ashes as a sign of their penance. Please discuss this with your child so that they may be prepared for the service.
Our Eucharist will follow the similar format with all gathered invited forward to receive either the sacrament of bread and/or wine, non-denominational blessings, or a prayer of thanksgiving and honor for their faith tradition. We all come forward to communicate to one another in our act of worship that we are all part of our Parish community and as a sign of our respect and honor for our diversity.
Please print this page, check the appropriate space below, and return this form to your child’s teacher tomorrow.
