Teacher: Sil Azevedo
This course is an
introduction to classic black and white photography. There is great benefit in mastering
traditional techniques for the student who is serious about photography and the
visual arts. Students who apply
themselves in this class will achieve a new level of understanding of the
photographic medium. They will learn and
practice the technical discipline that leads to greater control of their images
and deeper appreciation for the legacy of the masters. These themes will be
covered during this trimester long course:
History
A Bird’s Eye view of 200 years of photography
in context
Emphasis will be given to the development of
traditional B&W photography, the main landmarks and how photography evolved
and affected society.
Masters
The work of the masters will be considered with
special emphasis on techniques used in B&W film photography, such as proper
exposure, density, contrast and printing.
Exposure
The dynamic correlation of shutter speeds and
aperture will be taught. The student will be expected to know the basic f-stops
and shutter speeds by heart and will be tested to make sure they can properly
make compensations on the exposure chart.
The Camera
The various film camera types will be briefly
introduced, as well as their history and current applications. Within this context,
the 35 mm camera will be analyzed in depth.
The Film
Different B&W film types, characteristics
and application will be introduced. Special emphasis will be given to the
ISO/ASA factor and the proper selection of film for each lighting situation.
Students will use 400 ASA negative all around film, but will also be aware of
other types of films,
their characteristics and when to use them.
Capturing the Image
A very practical,
hands-on lesson on how to operate a 35 mm traditional film camera in order to
obtain properly focused and exposed photographs. Typical manual
controls for exposure and focus as well as different lenses and their
applications will be explained. Students will be instructed to use 50 mm fixed
lens for the duration of the course. This should encourage students to master
the use of normal lens and to inculcate the good habit of physically moving and
studying different angles, cropping and composition possibilities.
Development
Hands on lab experience
developing 35mm B&W film utilizing standard industry developers
Printing
Hands on basic printing using
RC B&W paper will be taught. Students will learn to create contact sheets,
proofs and final prints. The objective of the course is for each student to
have at least 3 rolls of film properly exposed and developed, at least 3
contact sheets and a collection of 15 final prints with correct density and
contrast (maximum black and white with full retention of details) with no flaws
such as dust spots, water marks or other blemishes.
