Here is the general plan we will follow for all chemistry classes at Parish this year.

Grading for all classes:  

                                         30% quizzes (open notes)

You will lose 50% of the total points each day an assignment is late!

 

 

 

 

Come to class ready to work, bring paper, pen and calculator.  I will not provide any calculators and you will not share calculators. If you forget yours, do your best with out it ( I hope you can do log functions in your head!!)

HONORS CHEMISTRY: A day test is Friday and B day test is Thursday over acids and bases. NO NOTE CARDS ALLOWED ON TEST.

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  The test on stoichiometry, Ch 9, will be: A day on FRIDAY and B day on MONDAY (4/14/08).

Focus on moles/mass type problems, % yield and limiting reactant type of problems. The test will be a list of problems. No Molarity or empirical formulas this time.

 

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Quiz on chemical equations and moles on Monday of this week.  The test will be on Wednesday of this week.  The lab on calcium and soap is due Wednesday of this week.

 

 

Week of March 10, 2008: 

 

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Work problems 30, 33 on page 322 in your text.

 

Week of March 3, 2008: 

 

HONORS CHEMISTRY: Complete the work sheet handed out in class and work problems 14,15,16 on page 323 in your text.  Complete these by the second class period this week.

 

 

CP CHEMISTRY:   Work the problems assigned in class for Wednesday.  You will turn these in for a grade.

Week of February 11, 2008:

 

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  You should have turned in your lab on ionic equations by now.  Be sure to complete the worksheet on Ch 8 material and the challenge review worksheet before doing the practice test.  We will go over the practice test the first class period next week.  The test over Ch 8 will be next Thursday for B day and Friday for A day.

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Complete the practice test for next class period next week.  We will have a quiz next Wednesday on chemical equations and the test will be next Friday over Ch 7.  You should have turned in your lab on ionic equations by now.

 

 

Week of January 14, 2008:

 

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Test over Ch7 will be this week: Wednesday B day and Thursday A day. Work the Test prep on p.257 in your text.  Answers are D,A,C,C,C,A,B,C,C for 1 – 9.  Know the polyatomic ions on page 226.  Must know at least ammonium, acetate, hydrogen carbonate, hydroxide, nitrate, nitrite, perchlorate, carbonate, sulfate, sulfite, phosphate.  Know their formula and charge.    Know acids on page 230.  At least know HCl, HNO3, HNO2, H2SO4, H3PO4.  Know stock system for naming compounds and know how to name binary molecular compounds.  Know how to calculate oxidation numbers. Know how to calculate moles, % composition, empirical formulas and molecular formulas.

 

Homework for next class after the test: Read Ch 8 and do problems 11,12,13 on page 290 in your text.  For B day class,  you should be able to work the sheet on Ch 2 on sig figs and the first sheet on Ch 8.  The second sheet for Ch 8 involves types of reactions which we will go over next week.

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Test over Ch 6 on Thursday of this week.  Know how to name compounds, know polyatomic ions ( see list above under honors chemistry), know % composition and empirical and molecular formulas.

 

Homework after the test:  Read Ch 7 and do the focus questions at the end of the chapter for next Tuesday.

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Read Ch 7 and do problems on p251 (end of chapter) :2,5,6,7,8,10.  Do these for next class meeting.

CP CHEMISTRY: Read Ch 5 if you have not done so yet.  We will finish the conversion work sheets and move on.

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Extra credit: Write a one page paper explaining what is an alloy and how does this explain your result for the penny lab.  How can you use density to determine if the penny is real gold or not? DUE THE DAY OF THE FINAL EXAM!

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Bring a completed and organized notebook to the final exam and receive an extra 10 points.

 

 

HOMEWORK: WEEK OF 10/29/07

 

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Test over Ch 5 is this week, Friday Nov 2nd for A day and Thursday Nov 1st for B day.

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Test over Ch 12 material will be this week, Friday Nov 2nd .

 

FRIDAY,NOV 2ND --- The practice test is due.  Bring the answers and an explanation of your answer to turn in.  This will be part of your test on this chapter.

1)      The beaker contained only water and NaCl.  What element caused the green color that formed and what element formed the gas you collected that made a pop with a flame?

 

2)      You added Mg metal to HCl and a gas formed that made a pop with a flame.  What element formed this gas?  The  solution was evaporated and left a white wax or solid substance.  What was this substance (this is not a element) ?  I am asking for your best quess on these questions.  Full credit can be earned with an incorrect answer if you indicate clearly why you made that conclusion.

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Complete the pretest handout for next class this week.  We will have a quiz this week on chemical reactions, Wednesday (A day) and Thursday (B day). You will then have time to finish the lab work.  We will have a test over chemical reactions next week.

 

ALL HONORS CHEM CLASSES, COMPLETE BY FIRST CLASS NEXT WEEK PROBLEMS 22 – 30 AND 41 AND 43 ON PAGES 291 AND 292.  I WANT THE TEST PREP COMPLETE BUT THE OTHER PROBLEMS ARE FOR YOU TO DO IF YOU NEED EXTRA PRACTICE.  

 

 

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Complete the first 3 pages of the concept review on chemical reactions for Wednesday (A day) or Tuesday (B day).  Work the problems on page 210, #33,34,42. These are due Wednesday for A day and Thursday for B day.  We will have a quiz this week on chemical reactions.

 

A day quiz will be Wednesday and B day quiz will be Thursday of this week.  We will finish the lab this week and have a test over chemical reactions next week.

CP CHEMISTRY:  Read Ch7 pages 193-207.  Work the focus questions on page 207, 1,2,3,4,5.  The first 2 questions are due next class and the rest are due by the end of this week.

HONORS CHEMISTRY:   Read Ch8 and complete the Ch8 review sheet.  We will go over the assigned problems at the end of Ch8 in class this week.  Bring the mole lab with you to class this week.

 

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Read Ch6 pages 153-170.  Work the focus questions on page 170, 1,2,3,4,5.  The first 2 questions are due next class and the rest are due by the end of this week.  We will complete the mole lab in class this week and work on doing more calculations using the correct sig. figs.

 

 

 

HOMEWORK: WEEK OF:  1/1/2007

 

HONORS CHEMISTRY:  Complete as much of the worksheet as you can by next class.  You will have class time to work on the problems and I will give you additional problems next class to work out.  By working on your own, you will find out what you do not understand and can come to class with questions.

 

We will have a quiz next Tuesday (B day) (1/9/07) and Wednesday (A day). 

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Work the problems on the worksheet showing all your work and see if you can get the answer given on

HONORS CHEMISTRY: Finish lab by the end of this week.  Write a short conclusion to your lab to explain your results. How close is your Q to the theoretical Q values?  Did you determine the correct name for the unknown?  If not why not?

 

Complete the first Ch 7 review sheet by Thursday for A day class and Friday for B day class.  Work on the second Ch 7 review sheet and the formula matrix next and complete these by Monday for A day class and Tuesday for B day class.  We will have a test on Thursday the 14th for B day class and Friday the 15th for A day class.  I have 2 work sheets for you to complete in class this week as well.

 

Advanced study sheet needs to be in your red folder by the end of this week.

 

CP CHEMISTRY:  Complete the lab this week and have it in your red folder.  Remember, if your lab sheets are not punched and bound into the red folder, they will not be graded.

 

Complete the classzone quiz (Ch 4 test1 and 2) sheets this week and put them in your red folder.  These are NOT to be punched and bound in.

Complete the formula matrix handout by Thursday for A day class and Friday for B day class.  We will have a test Thursday the 14th for B day class and Friday the 15th for A day class.
