Homework due Wednesday and Thursday:

- The paper is due on Wednesday for A day and Thursday for B day.  All the criteria for the paper is on a handout given in class. 

 

 

Homework due Monday and Tuesday:

-Quiz over words 43-100 on Monday and Tuesday. 

-Finish the packet for A Raisin in the Sun.

-Work on your paper.  The paper is due on Wednesday for A day and Thursday for B day.  All the criteria for the paper is on a handout given in class. 

 

 

Homework due Thursday and Friday:

-Quiz over words 1-42 on Thursday and Friday.

-Do the packet through Act 1, scenes i and ii.  Stop at Act II.

-Write a preliminary outline for your paper.  Write your thesis.  You should also have your secondary source.

-Study words 1-42 for a quiz on Thursday and Friday

-Study the list of vocabulary words

-Write a 1 to 1.5 page response to the following prompt.  Use two quotes.  Write two body paragraphs, with a sentence as your thesis for your opening and closing paragraphs.

-Study for a Romeo and Juliet test on Tuesday and Wednesday.  You should study your notes and study the play.  The test will consist of a section where you will identify who said a quote and what the quote means in relation to the play.  Also, there will likely be an essay about one of the main topics that we have discussed.  You will be able to use your book for the essay section.

-Gatsby Vocabulary quiz over the 20 words from chapters 5-9.  If you did not get the sheet, pick it up from outside Mr. Wilson’s door.

-Read Act I, scenes 1, 3, 5 and Act II, scenes 2, 3 of Romeo and Juliet.  Bring your book to class.

 

Homework due Friday and Monday:

-Paper due.  Staple your 2 drafts and outline together with the new draft on top.

-Study Gatsby Vocabulary sheet given in class for a quiz on Tuesday and Wednesday.  If you didn’t get a sheet, they are in front of the classroom door. 

 

Homework due Wednesday and Thursday, March 5th and 6th:

-Bring in a completed rough draft of your paper and your outline. 

-Bring Romeo and Juliet to class. 

-Completed paper will be due March 7th and 10th.

Prompts for paper, revised (2/29): 

-Choose one of three or make up your own thesis that must be approved. 

The paper will be 3-4 pages, due March 7th and 10th.  12 point, Times New Roman font.  1 and 1/4 inch margins, double spaced.  All the criteria for writing as discussed in class apply.  5 quotes.

 

1.  Does Nick gain anything from Gatsby for all that he sacrifices?  Why or why not?

 

2.  Why do Daisy and Tom get away with their irresponsible lifestyles, while Myrtle, George Wilson and Gatsby die?   What prevents justice from being served?

Homework due Wednesday and Thursday:

-Quiz over Vocab from chapters 1-4

-Brainstorm ideas for a paper.  Write down three quotes that you will use for your paper.  Bring these to class.  Also, write a thesis. 

-Read the handout about the history of The Great Gatsby.  Then, write down 10 observations, total, about the book, Fitzgerald, and other historical facts.

-In class, we’ll go over a consensus definition for each word. (Thursday-Tuesday; Feb 21st-Feb 26th).

-We will have a quiz (counting as two quiz grades) over the words on Wednesday and Thursday for the words from chapters 1-4. 

-The quiz will be sectioned in groups of 10, as is per chapter, with matching for the definitions.

-Write a poem in the style of one of the poets that we have studied so far.  Write down the name of the poet whose style you are emulating.

-Do a second revision of your paper.  Turn in all three revisions stapled together with the new version on top. 

-Read 20 pages in The Great Gatsby, bring your book to class.

-Quiz 4 over roots

-Type up Old Man paper.  Make revisions and corrections based on my comments and the handouts given about essay writing.

-Study 20 roots for quiz on Wednesday, Thursday.  This quiz will be more challenging than the previous, with more words where you have to provide the definition without matching. 

-Do questions 1-10 of Thinking Critically from the packet on TS Eliot’s poem.  Write out the answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Optional extra credit assignment for over the break:

-Write an original creative short story, at least 3 pages, double spaced. 

-Consider the guidelines on writing from “Natural, Simple, Clear”

-Be imaginative. Take risks.  Make your writing meaningful. 

-Stories are to be turned in on the first day back from break.  You will receive up to 15 points on a test grade for extra credit.  The quality and effort given to the writing will affect the amount of extra credit awarded. 

-If you are taking a creative writing class, it should be a different story rather than one that you’ve done for that class.

-Write a short personal piece:

            -Choose to write in either prose or free verse poetry.

            -Consider the class discussion about the honest and real vs. the fake.  This essay should reveal something about yourself beyond the superficial.  You should write what you are comfortable sharing.  You may choose to read it to the class, but it will not be required. 

            -So, this could be along the lines of an “About me” on facebook or myspace.  However, this should be appropriate for school and also be going beyond the superficial. 

            -You may choose to write in the same style as Masters and imagine your life recounted beyond the grave, or you may choose to share something more as a reflection of the present.  The point is not to be morbid, but to be thoughtful of your life beyond the superficial.

            1.  Compare Lennie and George- similarities and differences.

            2.  What would Lennie do without George?

            3.  What would George do without Lennie?

4.  What does this tell us about the power of their friendship?  What good comes from their friendship?

 

Homework due Tuesday and Wednesday, September 4th and 5th:

            -Bring a notebook or binder specifically for English. 

-Do 10 observations and 5 interpretations of the first two paragraphs of Of Mice and Men.  Do this also for the first two paragraphs of the second chapter.  Then compare these two sections in a few sentences. 

 

Essay due Friday-

            -Follow the parameters in the Summer Reading Packet. 

-Additionally, work towards the guidelines we discussed in class: Thesis, Introductory and Concluding Paragraphs, 3rd person.

            -Use turnitin.com to turn it in by 1:30 PM at the latest. 

            -Also, put a paper copy of your essay in my office.
