5TH/6TH GRADE GENERAL MUSIC CLASS REQUIREMENTS

Welcome to General Music Class!  This trimester, students will learn many new things about music that build on the basic knowledge gained in previous music classes.  This information sheet provides a summary of what is expected in General Music Class.

 

GOALS

  1. Understand how music relates to culture and society
  2. Knowledge of  how music is constructed
  3. Knowledge and basic experience of how music is performed
  4. Become more detailed listeners

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. The enjoyment and appreciation of music
  2. Provide a variety of musical styles
  3. Provide ORFF instruments for performance of music
  4. Develop Good Singing Skills and understanding of solfege

 

REQUIREMENTS

Daily participation is required in General Music Class. On-campus performances are required when held during the semester.  These performances will usually occur at All-School Eucharist and parents are always invited to attend.  Students who are in school on a performance day will be expected to perform at performance events.  Unexcused absences will have a major impact on a student’s grade. 

 

CLASSROOM RULES

1.  No talking when Mr. Whitmore is talking.

2.  Show respect toward others.

3.  Follow directions.  Be on time to class.

4.  Raise your hand if you have a question.

5.  Always strive to do your best.

 

GRADING

Weekly/Daily Participation – 50% of your grade

At the beginning of each week, every student starts with a letter grade of “A.”  Each time throughout the week you choose not to adhere to the aforementioned rules and directions, your grade will drop one letter grade.  I assign a grade at the conclusion of each week that reflects your participation for that week.  In essence, your daily/weekly participation grade is like receiving a test every time you come to music class. 

 

Homework – 20% of your grade

Any written homework given in class or outside of class will be included here.

 

Assessments – 30% of your grade
