Frequently Asked questions:

New Question:

Q: When I add up the area of each room, is the sum supposed to equal 600 m2 ?

No! The students were informed that I am checking their math for each room. Because of wall thickness and other difficulties, the students are encouraged to round the room dimensions (cm) to the nearest compatible number before converting to meters. Because of rounding, the total of each room will not total 600 m2. If you do not understand this, your child should. Ask them. If they don’t, have them come see me. (When I check the area of the entire house, I will be multiplying the length times the width of the outside walls.)

Q: We are having trouble finding a 1x1 meter board on which to place our home. Does the base need to be 1 meter x1 meter?

No, in fact the project guidelines state the project can not be larger than 1 x 1 meters. So, the board needs to be smaller than that, if you want to be on the safe side.

Q: Do we need to make windows, doors, hallways, etc?

No, follow the project guidelines carefully for what must be included. This is a math project – most all of the points are generated by the math involved. The home must be decorated, but does not have to be functional. Feel free to make it functional if you so desire, however.

Q: When my child cuts the balsa wood for the walls, it is uneven and is not very aesthetic. Will points be deducted for that?

Absolutely not! Because these students are not old enough to handle adult tools, they are not expected to build an architect’s model home.
