What
will we be learning in May?
Language
Arts
Throughout
the school year we have learned that writing is a powerful tool. We can take fleeting and intangible
memories, insights, and images and make them concrete. When we talk, our thoughts float
away. When we write, we put our
thoughts to paper. We can come back
to them later. This month, we
continue to study the craft of authors and apply them to our own work. The children have grown tremendously as
writers, and their final pieces will be a culmination of all the skills they
have learned throughout the year.

Our
theme in reading this month is “Friends to Grow
With.” In this theme, we will
observe characters growing and changing through their relationships with
others. Subsequently, we will be
discussing how real people in our lives influence us.
Additionally,
we continue to utilize independent reading time as a chance to practice
strategies good readers use.
Students are highly encouraged to read everyday over the summer for
skill maintenance.
Math
During
the month of May, we will conclude Unit 11 with a focus on multiplication and
division fact power. We will expose the children to shortcuts that include the
commutative property of multiplication, patterns in multiplying by one and
zero, and links between multiplication and division facts. Finally, we will move into Unit 12 where
we will review and extend three of the main concepts covered in second
grade: time, measurement, mental
and algorithmic computation, and data representation and interpretation. We encourage you to do fact practice for
addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication with your children throughout
the summer vacation.
