Flowers for Algernon & Steel Magnolias blossom in Black Box February 14, 2008
Classic theater productions of “Steel Magnolias” and “Flowers for Algernon” will be presented by Parish students Thursday through Saturday in the school’s Black Box Theater. “Steel Magnolias” was an off-broadway hit in 1987 that turned into a movie sensation about the lives of six women in northwest Louisiana who worked together in a beauty parlor. Parish’s stage version is completely student directed with an all-female, six-member cast.
“Flowers for Algernon” has been a literary classic since 1957 and a standard part of most English Department’s curriculums. With an 18-member cast, Parish portrays the poignant story of mentally challenged school janitor Charlie Gordon, who experiences a short-lived, intellectual improvement along with an experimental lab mouse.
Upper School, Winter 2008 Drama Performances “Flowers for Algernon” - Feb 14 & 16, 8pm; Feb 15, 5pm “Steel Magnolias” - Feb 14 & 16, 5pm; Feb 15, 8pm Reservations: email or 972-239-8057 x1307 Tickets: $5.00 for each show
Parish Theater history: Student directors February 11, 2008 Senior Kat Herriman and junior Emily Weaver are Parish’s first-ever student directors and will stage a production of “Steel Magnolias” this Thursday through Saturday. Herriman and Weaver have assisted on Parish’s last three plays but have directed the full length production of Magnolias and its six-member, all-female cast from its selection to its debut.
There are 18 cast members in another full length repertory of “Flowers for Algernon,” directed by Upper School Speech and Drama teacher Tom Taylor. “Flowers” was selected because of its broad and diverse cast and because it’s a staple of the Middle School curriculum.
“For the past five years, we have been able to offer our audiences plays that are also taught in the English department,” Taylor said. “Those other shows were ‘Our Town,’ ‘The Crucible,’ ‘Inherit the Wind’ and ‘Macbeth.’ Come out and support the student directors and the rest of us.”
