Abstract Painting
The term “abstract” has two meanings in art. It can mean art that is concerned with formal elements of art -- line, shape, color, pattern, and texture – but does not represent people places, or things.  The word is also used to describe artwork that has a subject but does not look realistic.

Fourth grade artists created lines and shapes with tempera paint.  They learned about mixing colors and about using contrasting hot and cool colors to create a 3-D effect.  When viewed with 3-D glasses, the colors really pop out!

Scratch-Etch Animals
Fourth grade artists drew animals from observation, noticing details as well as main shapes.  By using a variety of lines, repeated patterns, and contrast between light and dark areas, they have created small masterpieces.

Scratch-Etch paper has a color sandwiched between a white back and a black front.  Using a stylus (a pointed stick), students scratched through the black to reveal the color.

Weaving
Having learned basic weaving in third grade, fourth grade students increased their knowledge and skill by learning to weave patterns. The complexity of the finished pieces reflects problem solving as well as concentration and small-motor skill.

Some of the patterns you see were invented rather than taught!

Fourth grade weavers used cardboard looms and plastic tapestry needles to weave colorful acrylic yarn.
