Dear Parish Community:

Though the new academic year has just begun, we have exciting news to share. As of July 1, 2017, Michelle Lyon, Provost and Head of Upper School, will transition into the role of Assistant Head of School. The process for identifying Michelle's successor as Head of Upper School will begin in October 2016 and that individual will begin work at Parish in July 2017.

Since arriving in 2009 as Assistant Head of Upper School, Michelle has distinguished herself as a respected leader of faculty and students alike; she became Parish's third Head of Upper School in 2011. During her tenure, policies have been strengthened; signature programs like the Academy of Global Studies, ParishVirtual, the Leadership Institute and ParishBridge have been conceived and implemented; and the academic reputation of the division has continued its ascendance - marked most notably by Parish's acceptance into the prestigious Cum Laude Society in 2014. In 2012, Michelle added the responsibilities of Provost to her role as Upper School Head and assumed oversight of the entire PreK-12 academic program.

Organizational shifts like this occur in dynamic institutions at important junctures in their history. With a decade of graduating classes behind us; a fleet of nationally recognized signature programs such as ParishSTEM, ParishLeads, and the Parish Practices and MyPanther ePortfolio launched; and our reputation as a leading PreK-12 independent Episcopal school established, we have fixed our eyes on an exciting future built upon an audacious vision.

Within the next 36 months, Parish will further its Reimagine vision. The time models and curricular pathways our students experience will be redesigned to feature greater personalization, more student voice and choice in the learning process, and even more authentic, meaningful work. A technology system to support this model will be identified and implemented. In addition, we will host a visitation team for the renewal of our 10 year accreditation by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES). As Assistant Head of School, Michelle will coordinate these projects while overseeing the day-to-day operations on both of our campuses - providing critical coaching and support to academic leaders across campuses, unencumbered by her significant responsibilities as Head of Upper School.

While Michelle's appointment as Assistant Head of School is critical to attaining our bold Reimagine vision, so, too, are the commensurate shifts in my role as Head of School. I embrace being a visible and engaged Head of School. That will certainly not change. I will, however, confidently cede management of our program to Michelle so I can focus my energies in four, more externally oriented, roles essential to Parish's evolution:

  • Chief Leadership Officer: growing the leadership skill set of our senior leadership team and supporting them in doing the same for those whom they lead in the organization. Aligning our structure and allocating our resources to ensure that our talented faculty and staff are positioned for success on behalf of our students.
  • Chief Storyteller: connecting constituents (present and prospective parents; external community members; officials in higher education) to Parish's uplifting history and inspiring vision.
  • Chief Relationship Manager: strengthening established relationships and building new ones with those who can help Parish shape its future. This would include our growing alumni base who we want to engage meaningfully at Parish; community partners and higher education leaders who will offer resources and opportunities to our students and faculty; and the donors who will help make our dream of an $18.3 million dollar Performance& Community Center a reality on campus by 2021, if not before.
  • Chief Innovation Officer: scanning the environment for new opportunities to enhance and grow the Parish experience while ensuring the present innovation plan maintains its pace.

We are excited to bring this news to you. It signals the dynamic work that lies before us and hopefully communicates our enthusiasm for pursuing it. As further details related to this transition emerge, we will share them with you as appropriate.
