Boys soccer hits post-season play, honors  Feb 10, 2009

The Panthers advanced to the TAPPS Division II boys state soccer playoffs for the second-consecutive season under coach Craig Savage. Parish was eliminated in the first round in a 2-1, sudden-death overtime loss at Fort Worth Christian on Feb. 7. Parish had defeated FW Christian in penalty kicks to reach the TAPPS state soccer tournament last season.

Parish’s hopes to make a return trip to state fell a round short, but the Panthers did have four players selected to the All-District 2 first-team named by coaches. Nine Panthers received some post-season recognition.

“We had a season of close calls with a relatively young team,” Savage said. “We were disappointed with the end of the season as we feel we had more to prove. We expect to return a very strong team with a great deal of experience next year.”

Parish senior goal keeper Michael DeLong was chosen first-team all-district. Juniors Daniel Salas (defense) and Miguel Melgarejo (midfield) were also selected as was sophomore forward Luke Sparks.

Senior forward Millad Mortazavi, junior defender Matt Gravseth and sophomore midfielder Cristian Solis are second-team selections. Senior defender Trevor Ferrer and sophomore midfielder Coleton Stymiest are honorable mention.
